1329
First documented mention
The estate is first mentioned in 1329 as Possessió de s’Horta. At that time, it covered a large agricultural area known as “Marina,” stretching across approximately 1,700 hectares.
14th–17th century
Agricultural center
For several centuries, the estate served as an important agricultural center for the cultivation of olives, wine, and citrus fruits. It remained in the same family’s possession for almost four centuries.
18th–19th century
Golden age through the wine trade
The 18th and 19th centuries marked the estate’s golden age, especially through the flourishing wine trade with France.
Late 19th century
Beginning of the settlement of S’Horta
Toward the end of the 19th century, the estate began to be subdivided, leading to the emergence of the village of S’Horta as it exists today. The first mention of the place dates back to 1775.
1936–1950s
Military use
During the Spanish Civil War and in the years that followed, the estate was used as an artillery barracks.
1994
Start of restoration
After years of decline, the estate was acquired in 1994 by new owners, who began a major restoration to preserve its historic structure and elements.
2021
Completion of restoration and opening
The restoration work was completed in 2021, and the estate opened as an exclusive hotel under the name Villa Colom.

The history of Villa Colom begins in 1329, when the estate was first mentioned under the name Possessió de s’Horta.
Nestled in the gentle hills of southeastern Mallorca, it was for generations a lively center for olives, wine, and citrus fruits — a symbol of traditional Mallorcan life. A fascinating thought has long accompanied this place: very close to the villa lies the natural harbor of Porto Colom in the municipality of Felanitx — a place that many historical theories identify as a possible harbor or even birthplace of Christopher Columbus. If this theory were ever confirmed, it would not be impossible that Columbus himself entered this estate — whether to secure funding, contact influential people, or seek protection. At that time, the house was one of the few larger manor houses in the region.
Historical note
Felanitx and Porto Colom (Colom means Columbus in German) is regarded by historians as a possible birthplace or departure point of Christopher Columbus. Although this has not been conclusively proven, his connection to Mallorca and the villa’s strategic location at the time make the theory compelling.
The estate remained in family ownership for almost four centuries — a rare treasure of continuity and cultural depth. Its period of prosperity came in the 18th and 19th centuries, when the wine trade with France flourished. But with the phylloxera crisis came a decline — and a new era.
In the turmoil of the 20th century, the finca temporarily became a military headquarters — a forgotten chapter that still gives the place a distinctive aura today. The later careful restoration uncovered hidden treasures: barrel vaults, arcades, old water systems — traces of a long-gone era.
Today, Villa Colom is a retreat full of soul: historically rooted, elegantly reinterpreted — a place for people seeking authenticity, peace, and character.
